Cyprus eats well. Long lunches, charcoal smoke, sweet wine. Here's where to start.
Nobody eats alone in Cyprus, and nobody eats fast. Meals here are the day's main event: tables that start at one and are still going at five, grandmothers insisting you take a third helping, waiters who bring you something "just to try" because you looked curious. The taverna is the island's living room. You'll sit under a vine or a mulberry tree, someone will bring bread, olives, and a village salad you didn't order, and the afternoon will slowly rearrange itself around the table.
The food itself is honest rather than fancy: charcoal, lemon, oregano, olive oil, and whatever came out of the ground or the sea that morning. Meze is the great equaliser, twenty-plus small plates that keep arriving until you surrender. Souvla smoke drifts over every neighbourhood on Sundays. Halloumi squeaks, loukoumades drip honey, and somewhere around the coffee a bottle of zivania appears "on the house" and the owner pulls up a chair. That's not a gimmick for tourists, it's simply how Cyprus eats, and within a week you'll be planning your days around it too.
A few local rules help. Lunch is late, dinner is later, and booking matters on weekends. The house wine is usually better than the price suggests. If the menu has photos and five cuisines, keep walking; if there's no menu at all and the owner just tells you what's cooking, sit down immediately. And never, ever fill up on the first five meze plates. They are a trap, and everyone falls for it exactly once.

The Cyprus meze is a marathon: 20+ small dishes, hot and cold, finishing with grilled meats or fish. Book ahead, don't eat lunch.
