Where to shop, and when it is actually open

Seven malls, the big chains, the high streets and markets, with opening hours read from the official sites on 5 September 2026 and the law behind the Wednesday half day.

Shopping in Cyprus without the wasted trip

Cyprus shopping runs on two clocks. The malls and the big chains open seven days a week, roughly 10:00 to 20:00 with a later Sunday start. The traditional high street still follows the shops law: Wednesday afternoons off, Sunday closed outside the tourist zones, and a dozen compulsory closing days a year. Get that wrong and you drive across town to a shut door. This page lists every enclosed mall on the island with its official hours, parking and full store directory, the supermarket and fashion chains with their verified hours, the main high streets and farmers markets, airport duty free, and the Ministry of Health route to a pharmacy at midnight. It is for residents planning a Saturday as much as for visitors, and every time on it came from the official source, not memory.

Cyprus shop opening hours law, explained

Cyprus has a shops law that most visitors and plenty of residents have never read: the Regulation of the Operation of Shops and Terms of Employment of their Employees Law, N. 155(I)/2006, consolidated on CyLaw with amendments up to 65(I)/2020. Nothing has amended it since. These are the default rules for a "general shop", meaning a normal high street shop that is not inside a designated tourist zone.

  • Winter (1 November to 31 March): Monday to Friday until 19:30, except Wednesday when shops must close by 15:00. Saturday until 19:00. Sunday closed.
  • Summer (1 April to 31 October): Monday to Friday until 20:00, except Wednesday when shops must close by 15:00. Saturday until 19:30. Sunday closed.
  • Christmas (1 to 31 December): shops may open Monday to Sunday until 20:00, and until 18:00 on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
  • Easter (the 10 days before Easter Sunday): shops may open Monday to Sunday until 20:00, Good Friday and Holy Saturday until 18:00. If 1 May falls inside those 10 days it stays a closing day.
  • High summer siesta: between 15 June and 31 August a general shop may close for an afternoon rest between 14:00 and 17:00 (article 24). Some independents still do.
  • Compulsory closing days (article 23): 1, 2 and 6 January, 1 April, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, 1 May, Whit Monday (Kataklysmos), 15 August, 25 and 26 December.

Special shops (article 21) play by their own rules: bakeries and patisseries, cinemas, kiosks (periptera) and convenience stores, car hire offices and shops inside hotels, ports and airports may open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Off licences, florists and nurseries may trade 05:00 to 22:00 daily, Sundays included. Hairdressers close Thursday and Sunday. Building material and sanitary ware shops close Saturday and Sunday. Car dealerships close Sunday.

So why is everything open on Sunday? Article 27 lets the Minister of Labour designate tourist zones by decree, and inside a zone during the tourist season shops follow the decree's hours instead of the Wednesday and Sunday rules. The last decrees indexed on CyLaw date from 2015 and covered whole municipalities (the Limassol one allowed Monday to Saturday 05:00 to 23:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 19:00). We could not fetch a current decree from the Ministry, so treat zone boundaries as unpublished. In practice every mall and every big chain publishes Sunday and Wednesday afternoon opening in all districts, and the malls print their own Sunday hours, which is why the directory on this page quotes each mall rather than the law.

Questions on shop hours go to the Department of Labour Relations, +357 22 803116, [email protected].

Public holidays when shops close, September to December 2026

From the Central Bank of Cyprus holiday lists for 2026 and 2027, cross-checked against the shops law closing days. "Closed by law" means a general shop must shut; malls, supermarkets and kiosks publish their own lists (see each mall entry), and restaurants inside malls usually trade on the days shops close.

DateHolidayShops closed by law?
Thursday 1 October 2026Cyprus Independence DayNo. Not a compulsory closing day, but a paid holiday for shop staff, so many independents and most mall shops close. My Mall says it opens; check each mall's list.
Wednesday 28 October 2026Ochi DayNo. Same as 1 October: not compulsory, but expect many closures.
Thursday 24 December 2026Christmas EveNo. Trading allowed until 18:00.
Friday 25 December 2026Christmas DayYes. Every mall is closed.
Saturday 26 December 2026Boxing DayYes. Mall shops closed; some mall restaurants and leisure open.
Thursday 31 December 2026New Year's EveNo. Trading allowed until 18:00.
Friday 1 January 2027New Year's DayYes. Every mall is closed.
Saturday 2 January 2027Day after New Year (not a bank holiday)Yes. Shops closed by law; mall dining and leisure usually open.
Wednesday 6 January 2027EpiphanyYes. Shops closed by law.

No other public holiday falls between now and 31 December 2026. Throughout December shops may trade seven days a week until 20:00 under the Christmas rule, so the Sunday closure lifts for the month.

Finding the pharmacy on duty

Cyprus runs a rota system: every district has pharmacies "on duty" (diimerevonta and dianykterevonta farmakeia) outside normal hours, and the list changes daily. The only official list is the one published by the Pharmaceutical Services of the Ministry of Health, one Excel file per district (Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta), refreshed each day with the date in the file name. It gives the pharmacist, address, a landmark, the municipality and the phone number for each duty pharmacy. The Cyprus Pharmaceutical Association links to the same lists.

Normal pharmacy hours (decree KDP 210/2022, Annex II): winter Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 08:00 to 18:30 with a break 13:30 to 15:00; summer 08:00 to 19:30 with a break 13:30 to 16:00; Wednesday and Saturday 08:00 to 13:30; Sunday closed. Since January 2026 (KDP 51/2026) "seasonal" pharmacies in resort areas may open daily 08:00 to 23:00.

Duty pharmacy hours (the rota pharmacies), summer: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 13:30 to 16:00 and 19:30 to 23:00; Wednesday and Saturday 13:30 to 23:00; Sundays and holidays 08:00 to 23:00. Winter: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 13:30 to 15:00 and 18:30 to 22:00; Wednesday and Saturday 13:30 to 22:00; Sundays and holidays 08:00 to 22:00. After closing time the duty pharmacist must stay reachable until 08:00 for prescriptions, and the call out number is displayed in a lit box outside the pharmacy.

Pharmacy holidays: 1 January, 6 January, Green Monday, 25 March, 1 April, 1 May, Holy Saturday, Easter Monday, Easter Tuesday, Whit Monday, 15 August, 1 October, 28 October, 25 and 26 December. On those days only the duty pharmacies open.

How to use it: open the Ministry page, download today's file for your district, and ring the pharmacy before you set off, because the duty pharmacy may be in a different town from you. You will see premium rate "90 901" numbers and a "1414" line quoted around the web; none of them appears on an official page we could find, so we do not print them. For anything about the system itself, Pharmaceutical Services are on +357 22 608620.

Note the Mall of Engomi's own page and the Sklavenitis locator disagree on that branch's Sunday opening time (10:00 versus 09:00), so allow for either.

What is not here and why

A few things people ask for that we deliberately left out, because the official record does not support them as of 5 September 2026.

  • No new mall has opened since NEON Mall of Pafos in February 2023. Nicosia still has three malls, Limassol one, Larnaca one, Paphos two. Cyprus Mail's December 2025 Nicosia retail guide lists the same three Nicosia malls as this page.
  • Mall of Limassol (Mesa Geitonia): 114 stores planned, opening "as early as 2027". Not open. A second Limassol project in Agios Athanasios, next to Jumbo, got a conditional planning permit in July 2026 with no opening date and roundabouts to build first.
  • "Limassol Retail Park" and "Larnaca Marina Court": neither exists as a shopping centre. The Agios Athanasios industrial zone in Limassol has a big box cluster (Jumbo, Lidl, Sports Direct and others) but no branded park with a website or hours. Marina Court in Larnaca is a residential block with ground floor shops.
  • Primark: not in Cyprus. Primark's own store locator lists no Cyprus market.
  • Debenhams: the Cyprus site was unreachable and the parent group's retail page lists only Next, OVS and Ergon Deli under its department store arm, so we cannot confirm any Debenhams still trades. Do not plan a trip around one.
  • Germanos: the Cyprus domain no longer resolves and no official site exists, so we treat the brand as gone from the island.
  • Smart supermarkets and "The Home Store": no official website could be found for either, so no hours are printed.
  • Airport duty free hours: Hermes Airports and Cyprus Duty Free do not publish shop hours; the shops run around the flight schedule.
  • Premium rate pharmacy lines: the "90 901" numbers do not appear on any official page, so they are not here. Use the Ministry list instead.

Questions people ask

Are shops open on Sunday in Cyprus?

Malls and supermarkets, yes: every mall opens Sunday from 11:00 to 19:00 or 19:30, and Alphamega, Sklavenitis, Lidl and Metro trade Sunday (a handful of Sklavenitis branches close). Under the shops law a general shop outside a tourist zone is closed on Sunday, so small high street shops and chains such as Stephanis stay shut. In December every shop may open Sunday until 20:00.

What time do the malls close?

All seven malls close their shops at 20:00 Monday to Saturday. On Sunday Nicosia Mall, My Mall and Metropolis Mall close at 19:30; the Mall of Cyprus, Mall of Engomi, Kings Avenue Mall and NEON Mall close at 19:00. Restaurants, cafes, arcades and cinemas inside the malls run later, usually to 22:00 or beyond, and the mall supermarkets open earlier and close at 21:00.

What time do shops close on Wednesday?

By law a general shop must close by 15:00 on Wednesday, all year. Malls, supermarkets, kiosks and shops in designated tourist zones are exempt, so a mall Wednesday is a normal 10:00 to 20:00 day. Pharmacies also close at 13:30 on Wednesday, and Stephanis closes at 19:00 rather than 19:30.

Is there a Primark in Cyprus?

No. Primark's official store locator lists no Cyprus market. The nearest thing in spirit is Kiabi (Mall of Cyprus, Mall of Engomi, Metropolis Mall, NEON Mall), Terranova, Sfera or the outlet stores at Neo Plaza in Kokkinotrimithia.

Which is the biggest mall in Cyprus?

By store count on the official directories, Metropolis Mall in Larnaca lists 139 stores and Kings Avenue Mall in Paphos 134. Nicosia Mall and the Mall of Cyprus each list 110 outlets (Nicosia Mall claims 130+ brands), and My Mall Limassol is close behind with about 100 shops plus 22 food outlets. For parking, Mall of Cyprus has 2,535 spaces shared with IKEA and Nicosia Mall 1,700 free ones.

Where is IKEA in Cyprus?

There is one IKEA, at Verginas Street 1 in Strovolos, Nicosia, right beside the Mall of Cyprus and sharing its controlled car park (first two hours free, a third hour free with an IKEA receipt of 10 EUR or more). It opens Mon to Fri 10:00 to 20:00, Sat 09:00 to 20:00 and Sun 11:00 to 19:00. It is not at Neo Plaza in Kokkinotrimithia, despite what some maps say.

When are shops closed for public holidays?

The compulsory closing days are 1, 2 and 6 January, 1 April, Easter Sunday and Monday, 1 May, Whit Monday, 15 August and 25 and 26 December. Between now and the end of 2026 that means Christmas Day and Boxing Day only; 1 October and 28 October are bank holidays but not compulsory shop closures, though most mall shops close (My Mall says it opens). Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve trading ends at 18:00. Each mall's own list is in its directory entry.

How do I find a pharmacy at night?

Download today's duty pharmacy file for your district from the Ministry of Health Pharmaceutical Services page, linked in every pharmacy entry above. Duty pharmacies stay open until 23:00 in summer and 22:00 in winter, from 08:00 on Sundays and holidays, and after closing the pharmacist stays on call until 08:00 with the number shown in a lit box outside. Ring first, the duty pharmacy may be in another town. We do not print the premium rate lines quoted elsewhere because they do not appear on any official page.

Can we have a church wedding or blessing in Cyprus?

Yes. Couples wanting tradition can have an Orthodox blessing in the mountains at Kykkos Monastery, with the civil ceremony done separately. There are also whitewashed chapels like the Agioi Anargyroi Chapel at Cape Greco, the classic Cyprus elopement photo spot, and Anassa has its own Byzantine-style chapel.
