Pissouri is really two places in one. Up on the hill, a traditional stone-built village wraps around a cobbled square where tavernas spill out under the vines and life moves at village pace. Three kilometres below, Pissouri Bay is a wide crescent of pebble and sand framed by white cliffs, with clear water, a handful of beach restaurants and none of the crowds of the big resorts.
Sitting roughly halfway between Limassol and Paphos, surrounded by vineyards that have supplied Cyprus wine for centuries, Pissouri is a favourite with people who want the coast without the strip: swim in the morning, village square in the evening, Aphrodite's Rock ten minutes up the road.
The main event: a kilometre-long crescent of dark sand and pebble beneath the cliffs of Cape Aspro, with Blue Flag water, sunbeds, a water sports station and a row of relaxed beach restaurants. Big enough that it never feels rammed, even in August.
Up the hill, the old village is all narrow stone lanes, bougainvillea and a cobbled central square where the tavernas put tables out under the trees. Come in the evening when the village comes alive, and look out for traditional Cypriot nights with live music and dancing in summer.
The beach has a well-run water sports centre: paddleboards, kayaks, pedalos, jet skis and banana rides, plus good snorkelling around the rocks at either end of the bay. The clear, sheltered water suits families and first-timers.
Pissouri sits in the heart of the Limassol wine country. The village's own vineyards grow Xynisteri and red varieties, and a short drive inland brings you to the krasochoria, the wine villages around Omodos and Vouni, for cellar-door tastings and long taverna lunches.
Ten minutes west along the coast road, the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite rises out of the sea. Go at sunset when the light turns the water silver, and stop at the roadside viewpoint above for the classic photo. Free, and genuinely worth it.
The white cliffs west of the bay are some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on the south coast. A cliff-top trail toward Cape Aspro serves up huge sea views and, in spring, wildflowers everywhere. Sturdy shoes, water, and stay well back from the edge.
Twenty minutes east, one of the great archaeological sites of Cyprus: a Greco-Roman theatre perched on a cliff over the sea, mosaic-floored villas and Roman baths. Combine it with Kolossi Castle and the wine museum at Erimi for a full history day out.
Marked trails and quiet lanes link Pissouri to neighbouring villages through vineyards, carob and olive groves. Spring and autumn are perfect; go early in summer. The climb back up from the bay to the village is a workout in itself.
The next bay east: a long, wild strip of sand and shingle with barely any development, just a couple of laid-back tavernas. When you want a beach with nothing on it, this is the local secret worth knowing.
The tavernas around the cobbled square are the heart of village life: meze, souvla and kleftiko under the trees, with live Cypriot music nights in summer.
A row of relaxed restaurants sits right on the bay, fresh fish, grills and long lazy lunches a few steps from your sunbed.
Family-run spots in the old lanes serve the full Cypriot meze experience: twenty-odd dishes, homemade bread and village wine. Come hungry.
A short drive east, a couple of barefoot beach tavernas on an empty stretch of sand, the definition of a slow Cyprus afternoon.
