Lefkara is the most famous village in Cyprus, and it earns it. Draped over the limestone foothills of the Troodos about half an hour from Larnaca, it is really two villages: Pano (upper) Lefkara, with its stone houses, terracotta roofs and maze of cobbled lanes, and quieter Kato (lower) Lefkara just below, all whitewash and blue doors.
Its name travels because of two crafts. Lefkaritiko lace, the intricate hand embroidery worked here for centuries, is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, and local legend says Leonardo da Vinci bought a piece for Milan Cathedral in 1481. Alongside the lace grew a silversmithing tradition, and the village workshops still turn out fine filigree by hand.
Come for a slow morning: coffee in the square, a wander through the lanes, a chat with the lace makers stitching in their doorways, then a long lunch of tava, the slow-baked lamb dish this corner of Cyprus does best.
The heart of the Lefkara experience. Women still sit in doorways and courtyards working lefkaritiko by hand, a craft passed down for generations and recognised by UNESCO. Watch the needlework up close, ask questions, and if you buy, buy the real thing: genuine pieces take weeks and are priced accordingly.
Lefkara's second great craft. Family workshops along the main street produce delicate silver filigree, spoons, crosses and jewellery, much of it made on the premises. Step inside and you can often see the silversmiths at work.
Lose the map. The upper village is a knot of cobbled alleys, stone archways, carved wooden balconies and bougainvillea, one of the prettiest strolls on the island. Go early or late for soft light and empty lanes.
The landmark church of Pano Lefkara, Timios Stavros, holds a revered silver cross said to contain a relic of the True Cross, along with a fine carved iconostasis. The bell tower dominates the village skyline.
Most visitors never make it down the hill, which is exactly why you should. Kato Lefkara is quieter and arguably prettier, and its small church of Archangelos Michael preserves fragments of Byzantine wall paintings.
Housed in the restored Patsalos mansion, the Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmithing tells the story of the two crafts that made the village famous, with period rooms showing how a wealthy Lefkara household once lived.
Walk to the edges of the upper village for sweeping views over the terracotta rooftops and the folded hills running down toward the coast. Late afternoon, when the stone glows amber, is the photographers' hour.
Fifteen minutes away, one of the most important prehistoric sites in the eastern Mediterranean. This UNESCO World Heritage settlement dates back some 9,000 years, with reconstructed roundhouses showing how its people lived.
Perched on a 688 metre peak visible for miles, Stavrovouni is one of the oldest monasteries in the world, founded by St Helena in the 4th century. Only men may enter the monastery itself, but the drive up and the views are for everyone.
The village square is ringed with family-run tavernas serving the local speciality, tava: lamb, onions and cumin slow-baked in a sealed clay pot. Order it if it's on.
Old-school coffee houses where the regulars play backgammon under the plane trees. Cyprus coffee, a glass of cold water and nowhere to be: the proper village morning.
Tucked into the back streets, stone-courtyard restaurants do generous Cypriot meze, halloumi from nearby farms and village wine by the carafe.
A handful of low-key tavernas and cafes in the whitewashed lower village, ideal for a slow lunch away from the day-trip crowds up the hill.
