Peyia (Pegeia) spills down a hillside above the west coast, fifteen minutes north of Paphos, with an old village core of stone lanes and famous fountains at the top and the holiday coast of Coral Bay at the bottom. It has grown into one of the biggest municipalities in the Paphos district, popular with locals and expats alike for its sea views, tavernas and easy reach of both resort life and raw nature.
The coastline here is the draw: Coral Bay, the best sandy beach in the area, the moody sea caves at Cape Drepanum, the little island church at Agios Georgios harbour, and beyond that the tarmac simply stops and the Akamas begins. Beach morning, gorge hike, fish supper at a working harbour: that is a Peyia day.
The best sandy beach in the Paphos area: a sheltered horseshoe of golden sand between two headlands, with Blue Flag water, sunbeds, water sports and a strip of bars and restaurants behind. Shallow and calm, brilliant for families, and busy in high summer for good reason.
Just up the coast from Coral Bay, the sea has carved a run of dramatic white caves and arches into the limestone cliffs. Wander the clifftop paths for photos, watch the waves surge below, and stay for one of the best sunsets on the island.
The bay is the water sports hub of the west coast: jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks, pedalos, parasailing and banana rides all operate off the sand. Calm, shallow water makes it ideal for families and first-timers.
Up the hill, the old village centre keeps its stone lanes, church square and the famous Peyia fountains (ta pigadia), celebrated in Cypriot song. Come in the evening for a taverna dinner with the whole coast glittering below.
At Cape Drepanum, a tiny fishing harbour sits below the church of Agios Georgios, with the mosaic floors of an early Christian basilica and rock-cut tombs alongside. Fish tavernas overlook Yeronisos island just offshore. Free to wander, lovely at dusk.
On Peyia's doorstep, a slot canyon where 30 metre walls close to almost touching overhead. The walk in along the streambed is easy at first, rockier the deeper you go. Proper shoes, water, and skip it after heavy rain. One of the best short hikes in Cyprus.
North of Agios Georgios the tarmac ends and the Akamas begins: rough tracks, hidden coves and empty pebble beaches all the way to Lara. Join a jeep safari from Coral Bay or take a hire 4x4, ordinary cars will not make it.
An easy clifftop stroll links Coral Bay with the sea caves and on toward Agios Georgios, with the sea on one side and banana plantations on the other. Go late afternoon and time the sea caves for sunset.
North into the Akamas, green and loggerhead turtles nest in summer on this huge, undeveloped arc of sand. No sunbeds, no bars. Reachable by 4x4, boat trip or a long walk; cages on the sand protect the nests, so give them space.
Long-established tavernas around the old square and fountains do proper Cypriot meze, kleftiko and grills, with sunset views over the coast thrown in free.
Overlooking the tiny harbour at Cape Drepanum, family-run fish tavernas serve the morning's catch with Yeronisos island on the horizon.
The strip behind the beach covers everything from Cypriot grills to international menus and cocktail bars, lively on summer evenings.
