Latchi (Latsi) is a small fishing harbour just west of Polis, at the very edge of the unspoilt Akamas peninsula. It is the launch point for the famous Blue Lagoon, with its turquoise water and its fleet of boats, and the base for some of the best diving, water sports and wine-village drives in Cyprus. Quieter and more natural than the big resorts, this is the island at its most laid-back.
There is a rhythm to Latchi that gets under your skin quickly. Boats slip out towards the Blue Lagoon through the morning, the harbour dozes through the heat of the afternoon, and by evening the fish tavernas along the waterfront fill with the smell of grilled catch and the sound of unhurried conversation. This was a working fishing harbour long before it was a destination, and it still feels like one: small, low-rise and completely uninterested in becoming another resort strip.
The setting is the draw. Just west of here the road runs out and the Akamas peninsula takes over, all juniper, sea cliffs and empty coves, which makes Latchi the natural base for boat trips, jeep safaris and the walking trails around the Baths of Aphrodite. Who is it for? Couples, above all. The reason most people come to Latchi. Boats leave the harbour daily for the Blue Lagoon, an inlet of glassy turquoise water perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Trips pass the Baths of Aphrodite, sea caves and the Akamas coast, with glass-bottom, sunset and private charter options.
The clear, protected water off the Akamas is some of the best diving in Cyprus, with reefs, caves and abundant marine life. Local dive schools run try-dives for beginners and guided boat dives for the certified.
From the harbour and beach you can hire jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks and pedalos, or book parasailing and banana-boat rides. Calm, shallow water makes it ideal for families and first-timers.
Inland from Latchi the hill villages produce excellent local wine. Drive up to cellar-door tastings of Xynisteri and Maratheftiko, or visit the renowned wineries around Polis and the Akamas foothills.
A shaded natural pool and grotto where the goddess of love is said to have bathed, at the start of the Akamas nature trails. Easy walks lead off along the coast with sweeping sea views. Free to visit.
Beyond the tarmac the Akamas is raw wilderness, gorges, hidden beaches and turtle nesting sands. Join a 4x4 safari or hike the Avakas Gorge and Aphrodite trails. One of the last truly wild corners of Cyprus.
A working fishing harbour with bobbing boats, fish tavernas and a long shingle-and-sand beach stretching east toward Polis. The relaxed heart of the area and a lovely spot for a sundown stroll and a fresh fish supper.
A 7.5 km circular hike starting at the Baths of Aphrodite, climbing through juniper and pine to ruins of the medieval Pyrgos tis Rigainas and huge coastal views over Chrysochou Bay. Go early, take water.
The wild west side of the Akamas, where green and loggerhead turtles nest in summer. No sunbeds, no bars, just a huge arc of sand. Reachable by 4x4, boat trip or a long walk; cages on the sand protect the nests.
